Definition of Business Activities

Business activities are the activities that a business undertakes in order to generate revenue and profits. That means they include all the activities that are necessary to produce and sell goods and services. These activities can be divided into three main categories: operating, investing, and financing activities.

To illustrate this, let’s look at a small bakery. The bakery produces and sells bread, cakes, and other baked goods. To do this, they need to undertake a variety of activities. For example, they need to buy the necessary ingredients, mix them, bake the goods, package them, and then sell them. All of these activities are considered operating activities. If the bakery builds a new storage facility (i.e., investing activity), it needs to take out a loan (i.e., financing activity).

That means it is important for businesses to understand the different types of activities they need to undertake and how they can optimize them to maximize their profits.
