Definition of Demand Curve

The demand curve is a graphical representation of the relationship between the price of a good or service and the quantity of that good or service that buyers are willing to purchase at that price. It shows the quantity of a good or service that buyers are willing and able to buy at different prices, all else being equal.

Example

Imagine a clothing store trying to sell T-shirts. The store owner collects data on how many T-shirts are sold each day at different prices. The data is summarized in a demand schedule, which is then used to plot the demand curve. The demand curve shows how much of a T-shirt is bought at every price point. Typically, the higher the price of the T-shirt, the fewer shirts people will buy. If the price is too high, no one might buy a T-shirt at all. On the other hand, if the price is low, demand for the T-shirt may increase significantly.

The slope of the demand curve reflects the responsiveness of buyers to changes in price: it becomes steeper when buyers are less responsive to price changes, and flatter when buyers are more responsive.
