Definition of Monopolistic Competition

Monopolistic competition is a market structure in which there are many firms producing similar but not identical products. That means each firm has some degree of market power but not enough to set prices freely. Instead, firms compete with each other by offering slightly different products, prices, and services.

Example

A good example of monopolistic competition is the fast-food industry. There are many fast-food restaurants in most cities around the United States, all of which offer similar products. However, each restaurant has its own unique menu items, prices, and services. For example, McDonald’s and Burger King both offer hamburgers, but they have different recipes and marketing. As a result, customers can choose which restaurant they want to go to based on their preferences.

Why Monopolistic Competition Matters

Monopolistic competition is an important market structure because it allows firms to differentiate their products and services. This, in turn, gives customers more choices and allows them to find the product that best suits their individual needs. In addition to that, it also encourages firms to innovate and develop new products in order to stay competitive. This, in turn, can lead to an increase in economic efficiency and consumer welfare.
